Rochdale Town Hall is widely regarded as one of the UK’s finest examples of Victorian gothic architecture. The Grade-I listed building was designed by William Crossland and opened in 1871 as a symbol of the town’s industrial standing in the textiles trade.
The building was falling into a poor state of repair and it had become vital that it was preserved for generations to come. The interior was starting to become damaged and the building's roof needed replacing. A restoration would mean for the first time in its history, the town hall would be fully open for the enjoyment of all residents and visitors to create an open and accessible space with exhibition rooms and a new hall for community events.
The client contacted NBC to help with part of the restoration to eliminate the mess caused by roosting / nesting pigeons. There was a huge pigeon colony on site and for many years have called this place home. The pigeons were roosting on windows, beams, shelves and other places and NBC were able to successfully remove the guano and bird proof the building to prevent the return of nesting pigeons.
When NBC were on site, the Site Manager asked if we could help with a much different job. There were 324 internal panels inside Rochdale Town Hall, all hand painted and original. As this is now being opened to the public they wanted NBC North Team to install netting around each panel purely as a precaution measure to prevent any potential falling.
Our proposal was to support the customer in the supply and install of a 50mm x 50mm net around each panel with stainless steel fixings and enough intermediates to prevent any potential fall from above.
This was an unusual task but NBC thoroughly enjoyed working with this customer on this project.
