NBC were asked to assist Galliford Try in the regeneration of the Broadmarsh Bus Station as part of a wider redevelopment of Nottingham city centre. The exciting new green, pedestrian-friendly public space is being funded through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund. The scheme has attracted over £20m of Government funding and work to transform the look and feel of the area began in August 2020.
As part of the re-development, bird proofing was required to protect the building from pigeons. Our NBC team in Nottingham attended the site to survey and after costs agreed, were awarded the contract. After a pre-start meeting, works began in March that were to last until August 2021. First scope of works were to install a post and wire system to the leading edge of all levels to prevent pigeons sitting and fouling the façade as well as the ground below – totalling over 1000 metres. This proved challenging as the dynamic of the site was constantly changing as the development progressed. There were challenges around the ground, access and working around other contractors but working with the site management NBC were able to install this system on time and on budget to the satisfaction of the client.
Whilst installing this system it became apparent that newly installed laser cut panels would also pose a problem as the voids could easily be exploited by pigeons as they look to seek shelter and nest in the car park itself (particularly in the winter months). NBC were able to make recommendations that these 5 panels be protected, with a translucent net, so as to prevent ingress in these areas and ensure the aesthetics of the design could still be truly appreciated without being dulled down by such an installation. These additional works were agreed, and with help from site management around access and scheduling, a further 5 day install was completed to the client’s satisfaction.
The last schedule of works agreed were to install a netting system to the garage itself, allowing access to all services whilst preventing pigeons from perching/nesting and fouling the ground, vehicles and members of the public below. Once again, after 2 surveys, detailed design and pre-start meetings, NBC completed the 20 day install to achieve the objective on budget and on time in readiness for the building to be handed over to Nottingham City Council.
